'E-bikes and LEVs earn leading position in policy making'

BRUSSELS, Belgium - To step up advocacy at the European Commission, LEVA-EU presents a study which shows that e-bikes and light electric vehicles deserve a more prominent position in policies on sustainable mobility and mitigating climate change.

The Swedish company Vässla is one of the few manufacturers that has a type-approved e-bike without pedals on the market and thus complies with the new traffic code in France.

PARIS, France - The legalisation of e-scooters in France seems to be imminent with the creation of a new vehicle category in the French traffic code. The new so-called 'cyclomobiles légers' or light mopeds category was welcomed by the e-scooter industry. However, industry organisation LEVA-EU has warned for a big setback.

GENT, Belgium - Trade association LEVA-EU says companies that solely assemble e-bikes are confronted with unfair competition that is threatening their existence. EU regulation makes it almost impossible to start up new companies and could severely hinder the EU's net-zero emissions target.

France makes bike marking mandatory to protect against theft

PARIS, France - To face the huge problem of bicycle theft in France, the French Government has, since January 1st, 2021, passed a law which imposes the mandatory marking of all new bikes sold in a store or on the Internet. This law will be extended to second-hand bikes sold in retail shops from July 1st.

EU Temporarily Suspends Trade Preferences for Cambodia

BRUSSELS, Belgium - Yesterday, the European Commission has temporarily withdrawn tariff preferences for specific products granted to Cambodia under the Everything But Arms (EBA) arrangement over concerns related to serious human and labour rights violations. EBA is a condition of EU's Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) under which Cambodia enjoys an import duty free status for goods (including bikes) that the country exports to the EU member states.

Cambodia Closer To Losing EU Trade Benefits

BRUSSELS, Belgium - Currently Cambodia is by far the biggest exporter of bikes to the European Union 28 member states thanks to the country's EU duty-free export status. However, this situation might change drastically next month. Then the EU will determine whether Cambodia's human rights record has improved sufficiently to avoid losing the tariff-free entry to the EU market.
